Reflection on Project 1: Trust the Process

Blog Post 10/16/20

I am really proud of what I accomplished for this project. My process I think started off very slowly. I really didn’t get into “designing” until probably about halfway through because I think I started very timidly. My first iterations were focusing on laying out information, but much of what I planned for then didn’t even really stick, except the left aligned text. So though I kinda veered in a different direction, every step did inform the next. And I think that is the beauty of process, to see how a project evolves.

One thing I did throughout this project that I always hate when it happens is when I get stuck and end up panicking and then quickly changing my whole project. This happens when I don’t feel excited about what I’m working on= I’m not motivated to complete it= procrastination. I felt this about three quarters of the way through the project where I was in a funk. Though, some cool explorations came out of it. So I am thankful and grateful for the realizations that I have made and how I am able to appreciate them, even if not in the moment. I would say those crazy poster designs informed the color palette that I ended up with. I still wanted to keep that vibrant energy but tone it down to something more readable and accessible. Some of the line work used throughout those posters also informed the dotted line motif that I used in the banners to indicate a “journey” and the idea of from-here-to-here. So overall, I should not have acted like changing directions was a bad thing because it led to the finished product and was a pivotal moment in the project. Sometimes change is a good thing.

What I am looking forward to continuing in the next project is keeping the big picture in mind. I am a very methodical and detail-oriented person so sometimes I find it difficult to zoom out and see a project holistically. I think this is evident in how I wanted to create line drawings for every building even if that didn’t help to develop my system as a whole. I realize the importance of viewing a project from how it works and functions in a larger sense and I want to get better at focusing on this. It is important I think in information design, as well as in any other creative field, to be able to view a project as a whole and be able to realize what it does and how it affects the viewer. This point of view doesn’t necessarily come naturally to me but I want it to so I can be a stronger designer.
